Yoga Therapy for the Mind is an 8-week course developed as a complementary therapy to support those experiencing depression, anxiety, and stress related issues. The course draws on ancient yoga principles and mindfulness meditation techniques that are the foundation ofMindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) one of the fastest growing newer therapies for depression in the UK. Students meet once a week for two hours, exploring the body-mind connection through asanas, pranayama, and restorative properties of mindfulness with psychotherapeutic holding.
More recent scientific research continues to affirm that depressed mood, anxiety, and stress are best treated with a method that addresses both the physiological and psychological dimensions. Yoga naturally works with these various elements. Students are taught practises to regulate mood, rebalance the nervous system, and engage less with unhelpful thought patterns, learning how to use the mind to heal the body and the body to heal the mind - building resilience for both short- and long-term wellbeing.
In the first two weeks of the course students are taught how to regulate and understand mood through breath. Next, they learn how to understand emotional health through the body, and finally through the mind. Each session of the course offers cumulative skills which help students to both become aware of and make helpful changes in their mind body system. In a variety of asanas students learn how to coexist equally with both comfortable and uncomfortable physical sensations. By learning how to be with various sensations in the body they develop greater tolerance to be with various thoughts in a gentle way with less resistance
Students are given homework and reading material to help integrate yoga and mindfulness practice into their daily life. At the close of each session there is an optional discussion space for students to talk about their experiences during class and how to use what they learn when facing the challenges of daily living. Additionally, there is opportunity before and after sessions for brief private discussion with the therapist. All levels of yoga and meditation are welcome. Research by Veena Ugargol found participants showed significant improvement in anxiety and mild depression compared to a control group.
